God is out there on the other side of all of the walls that are surrounding your awareness. I’m certain you know the ones I’m referring to. They are the walls of the self and self-interest. They are arranged into the labyrinth that creates what you think of as the world. The first one is made of vibrations. It is formed of all the sounds, voices, music, and noise that fills your everyday and every-night world. Then there is the wall of light patterns, the ones that are reflected by matter and those that are constantly being displayed on computer, television, and phone screens. Then there is the wall of thought. It is made of everything you can consider, remember, or imagine using your memories, experiences, knowledge, and beliefs. Then there is the wall of emotion. It is constructed from all of your feelings, fears, and desires. Then there is the wall of familiarity, and on the other side of that is the wall of meaning, and then the wall of family and friends, the wall of career and work, and on and on, wall after wall.
So, here you are inside all of these walls, surrounded by all of this stimulation and distraction, and there’s God over there on the other side of it all. God there, you here. You can’t see God, because you are always within your walls looking at them. You can’t hear the sound that accompanies God, because you are always listening to what you hear within your walls. These walls are of great importance in your life. If someone threatened them you would defend them. They are what defines your existence, and they are the source of your identity. If they were magically removed, you would suddenly be nothing more than a spark of awareness within an organism, in an unintelligible universe. You might be able to see God, but it wouldn’t be you anymore that was doing it. It would just be the seeing of what is beyond the self, and it would be incomprehensible, incomparable, and indescribable. Who would want to give up so much for something with so little worldly value?
But what if you could transcend these walls from time to time? What if your awareness could rise above the sounds and sights, thoughts and feelings, into an infinity and eternity of selfless wonder? What if you had a choice and you could stop being you and simply be for a while? What if you actually did it and were able to see God? Then what?
