There are two aspects to seeing at the level where visions occur. They are clarity and totality. Clarity is only possible when there are no barriers or obstructions. Totality is only possible when the entirety of what is before us is seen all at once as if it were a single entity. In both regards the mind and the brain itself are the sources of limitation.
If you wish to develop perfect clarity it is important to recognize that there are three separate levels of being. Vision can be experienced in each of them. Most of us spend our lives experiencing the world through all three simultaneously, like lens filters on a camera. The three levels are our physical body, our inner, non-physical self which can either move independently of the body, or in perfect synchronization with it, and pure awareness which can exist separately or within the other two. I do hope you won’t accept this assertion, but will explore it fully.
Now for the barriers and obstructions. At the highest level, pure awareness, there are none. At the middle level, the inner self, there is the presence of fear, desire, and intention but they are experienced as impetuses. At the lowest level there is the brain and the mind with all corresponding structures, contents, and activities. True clarity is only possible when the inner and outer selves are both perfectly still and free from all thought and emotional activity or residue. At the same time, the pure awareness must be elevated to an apex above them. The “lightness of being” necessary for this ascension will most easily occur when the last emotion experienced is one of pure goodness without any purpose or destination, and the mind remains acutely aware in a state of absolute silence.
Totality, the other aspect of this vision-level seeing, requires a little practice at first. We are taught, perhaps inadvertently, to scan our surroundings, notice what is relevant, and focus on what is important or interesting. As a result, we spend our lives seeing parts but rarely or never the whole. It is possible to see all of the parts at once as if there were only one thing before us and it occupies our entire field of vision. When seeing in this fashion, all that is in front of you will be in focus. Discovering how to see this way puts you at the threshold of the most profound experiences a human being can have.
