The real mystery isn’t all the unknown aspects of the universe, it is how we are able to exist in the middle of it all and only see our thoughts and feelings in the foreground. We cover our eyes with our knowledge and beliefs. We block our ears with our internal voice and its soliloquy about our fears and desires, our gains and losses, and our pleasures and pain. Beyond the perimeter of the self, the entire universe is unfolding, carrying us along in our galactic destiny. Yet, all we can experience is, “that was so dishonest of her to say that”, “my boss is being such a jerk”, “this is such a great opportunity”, or “what are we going to do about this problem?”.
We are seven billion variations of the human organism stuck to the surface of a planet spinning at nearly a thousand miles per hour, orbiting an enormous sphere of fire. This star is dragging us along as it orbits within a galactic swarm of billions of other stars, and together they are separating from billions of other galaxies in the inflation of the universe. In the middle of this, we need new tires on the car, are trying to get our teeth whiter, and wonder if we are starting to lose our hair. We are alive in the present version of a billions-of-years-old moment that is changing every nanosecond, we are surrounded by an impossible number of speeding fireballs, some more than two thousand times the size of our sun, and we need to make a dentist appointment, pick up some milk on the way home, and see if those shoes are still on sale.
Whenever a person wonders where the truth can be found and seen, a fish is wondering where the ocean is; when they wonder if or where God can be found, a fish is wondering about the existence of the sky.
